Life Giver?

This week I ask us all to ask ourselves this question…Are we life givers or life takers?

The challenge:

When you first meet someone ask them how they are doing.

Then ask them what is new in their lives.

Finally try to drop the word I from the conversation…make it a you or a we.

Of these 3 areas are foreign to you…you may just be a life taker!

Obituary.

An Obituary printed in the London Times…..Absolutely Dead Brilliant!!

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death,

He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers;

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

John Wooden wisdom

CHARACTER IS TESTED WHEN A PERSON RECEIVES POWER This favorite quote of Coach Wooden’s was one of many he used and applied from his favorite American, Abraham Lincoln. Coach Wooden began studying Abraham Lincoln in college because President Lincoln was a man that his father Joshua Wooden had often studied and quoted. Coach wanted to learn more about how his own father had become such a great person, and he thought that by studying President Lincoln he would gain some additional insight into his dad. Much of Coach Wooden’s leadership style and favorite ideas were a result of his extensive research of President Lincoln (Coach felt he had read every significant book ever written about President Lincoln). Three key elements of great character: humility, consideration for others and integrity are sometimes severely tested when a person receives power. These three character traits might be tested when we simply face adversity, but they are tested at a more intense level when we receive power, because maintaining these qualities when we have power requires self discipline. It is much like the idea that true character is what you do when you know no one will know what you did. The boss will usually be humble and courteous to his boss, but will he or she have that same humility and consideration for the people he or she supervises if it is not required? Coach Wooden often commented that he admired President Lincoln because he never lost his common man touch. As has been well documented, Coach Wooden had the same humility and consideration for others whether he was dealing with the President of the United States or a custodian that he encountered during a road trip with his basketball team. With power often comes additional material wealth and recognition, which is easy to become attached to. When a leader has to make a decision knowing that if he or she acts with integrity it may cost him or her much or all of his or her material wealth or recognition, it is a true test of character. Coach believed that a leader’s most powerful tool is his or her example. The leader who has power but maintains their humility, consideration of others and integrity is likely to inspire the same qualities in the people he or she supervises. The waterfall of character that a leader starts throughout an organization can be very positive or very destructive. The positive waterfall requires great character with great power; not an easy task, but a worthwhile one. Joshua Wooden created this positive character waterfall for his son John. In one way or another we will have that same opportunity for someone else as well Craig Impelman

Remedy for anxiety?

Yes, I know, I’ve already written a few blogs on anxiety. However, I recently watched a video on anxiety by Steven Furtick and I thought his teaching was worth another spot on my posts.

He began with Psalm 139:23-24.

Search me, God, and know my heart;test me and know my anxious thoughts.

See if there is any offensive way in me,and lead me in the way everlasting.

He listed seven things to consider when we are anxious.

1.INTAKE: What am I filling my mind with? Is it truth?

2.IMBALANCE:Am I taking in the Word of God?

3.INDECISION: I need to make decisions, trust God, and move on!

4.INTEGRITY: Is there anything in my life that lacks integrity and causes me to worry about exposure?

5.INTENTION: I need to shift from“what about me?” to“what about you?”

6.IMAGINATION: I need to take my thoughts captive to Christ and do what is right. I can’t allow myself to be trapped by the fear of what might happen, but replace fear with faith.

7.ISOLATION: We all need support. I can’t go it alone. I need the body of Christ for my support system.

These thoughts helped me to work through some of my own anxiety and I hope they are helpful to you. We need to ask God to search our hearts and then take personal responsibility for our anxiety. I would love to hear your thoughts!

White Space Please

Recently I was able to attend the Global Leadership Conference. It was a great two day investment! One of the speakers talked about intentional “White Space” in our lives. White space, as I understand it, is time we spend alone to think, plan and dream. Many of us do not do white space well. Our lives get so cluttered with what needs to be done that white space usually gets crowded out.

As I thought about this, I jotted down a few questions to ask ourselves:

1. Is my life better described as cluttered or balanced, allowing white space?

2. What am I spending time on to increase my personal sense of worth?

3. What drives me? What encourages me?

4. What am I allowing to steal white space in my life?

· Activities/Busyness?

· Pursuit of position?

· Business/work?

· Demands of others?

· Other?

For those of us who claim Jesus as Lord, are we leaving any white space for Him to speak?

By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.” 1 Cor. 3:10

Just how tired are you??

The Lord gives strength to the weary. Isaiah 40:29

In the previous verse Isaiah writes: The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.

The starting point for us must be to know who God is. In a world of uncertainty, the statement that God is everlasting is a great encouragement. I know that my life on earth will end one day but so what? God is everlasting and he has promised that I will live on beyond death. Only an everlasting God can promise that.

Athletes understand weariness. I remember once being invited to watch an elite hurdler train. He was doing a drill. He said to me “I am absolutely exhausted but we are trying to see how may more times I can compete the drill within XX seconds”. It made me exhausted just to watch.

Isaiah says that God “will not grow tired or weary” – imagine that! And it gets better (verse 29) “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak”.

The next time you are exhausted – in the middle of an impossible repeated drill or other demanding task, just remember the God who never grows weary and is the source of your strength.

The chapter ends with another great promise:” those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint”.

I am not sure that runners (and race-walkers) can take this verse literally – as a promise that they will never grow weary! What we can be sure of is that the eternal God will be with you when you are! Stuart Weir

BUYING FRIENDS

Have you ever been involved in a situation that you knew was a set up? In other words, someone you know is doing something nice for you but you know there are strings attached. You know they expect something in return. Because of that, the phrase “I owe you one” has always bothered me.

Taken at its best, the phrase is simply a way of expressing appreciation. But at its worst, the statement reeks of motive.  As followers of Jesus, we need to respond when we see others in need. If we give, we need to give with a pure heart, expecting nothing in return.

Too often we can be guilty of giving in order to get. We do something nice to gain a friendship or to garner favors. We keep mental records of who owes us a favor. We give compliments in order to receive them. There are unspoken expectations.

This week, let’s examine our motives. Are we using words or works to impress or gain favor, expecting future payback?  Are we priming someone else for a need we might have in the future?  We are probably all guilty of this at times.

“People look at the outward appearances, but the Lord looks at he heart.” 1 Sam. 16:7
